How do you go about finding out about your product liabilities? How do you know if there are regulations for the items you are making, and how to comply?

I want to make baby toys and products. We are worried about safety requirements and laws though. If it has a ribbon, is there a certain length of thickness to make sure the little one cant hurt them selves???  Or am I over thinking this. I asked a girlfriend who makes baby stuff and she said she had not even considered it….I would hate to do anything wrong.

On a more positive note, our local material store, Spotlight, has had a huge sale so I went crazy buying up materials during my lunch break. I then raced home and once the girls were in bed I made my first cube toy. Yay very excited. Not quite finished yet. I bought some eco stuffing and rattle inserts on line so waiting for them to turn up.

Something that actually turned out ok. My husband also commented on the speed I made it, and how good it looked for something to quick. As I have been thinking. Simple and easy can be great!

Plenty more materials to try things with so must get back to it – while I have the motivation. I read an article yesterday on why Etsy business fail –

Etsy fever

Is there a limit to how many Etsy favorites one can have?  If not, never fear I am sure I will soon be able to tell you!!

So I am starting with research. I have added what feels like hundreds of items to my Etsy favorites. I then realised many are for the same store, so I have started adding stores instead of individual items. Much smarter. Also when I actually go to look there aren’t that many…… must keep looking!

This has me all inspired. I have found lots of supplies and items I want to make things with. At first I didn’t know what just that I HAD to use them…. until I woke at 1am to feed Z on Monday night, and couldn’t get back to sleep. My head started whirring with ideas. Now I have four items I want to make and see how they work out. And two I cant find on Etsy yet, so that’s a good sign (or maybe bad because no one wants/needs….) Better get moving and find out.

My problem is that I am not the best sower. So what I have in my mind, and what comes out can be two very different things. I am almost always disappointed with the end result. Simple is the key I think. One to it turning out ok, two so that I can make in large quantities when my store takes off (hmmm, fingers crossed), and three so its cost effective.

Now that I have an idea I like and want to start trying out, that means spending some money which makes it a bit real, do I really want to do this…. YES, am I scared…… YES.

Now what?

Ok I know what I want… how do I get there though?

I am all excited about amazing packaging, cute logos, funky looking displays and locations for product shots. Am I missing anything?

Oh yeah, WHAT AM I GOING TO SELL? It is the kind of important first step.

In the past I have through that it has to be something new and unique. My husband is fond of the saying “see a need, fill a need”. So am I, but everything I see has already been filled (maybe if I hadn’t waited so long!).  So now I am starting to see that the product its self doesn’t have to be, it just has to have my own unique ‘me’ in it. Some different twist, or design that makes it stand out from the rest. What do you think? Are there some products that will always be in demand?

My fear is that there is so much of the same out there that what will I bring that is different? Will anyone want mine? Am I condemning myself before I even begin? Am I in for a marketing nightmare? What if I step on someone’s toes, causing legally troubles? What about product safety and liabilities?………….  Am I making excuses?
